Srisailam Temple History

Srisailam Temple is a Hindu temple located in the town of Srisailam in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The most remarkable and worth seeing here is the Mukha Mandapa built during the Vijayanagara period. The center of the temple has several mandapam pillars and houses a colossal visible idol of Nadikeshwara.

According to Shivpuran, the story of Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple is related to the family of Lord Bholenath. It is believed that Ganesha, the younger son of Lord Shankar, wanted to marry Kartikeya first. On this point, Bholenath and Mata Parvati put a condition in front of both of them to solve this problem that whoever returns after circumambulating the earth will get married first. Hearing this, Kartikeya started circumambulation but Ganesh ji was sharp with intelligence, he circumambulated Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva and told them to be equal to the earth. When Kartikeya came to know this news, he got angry and went to Krunch mountain. When all the efforts to persuade him failed, Goddess Parvati went to take him but seeing him, he fled from there. Parvati ji was upset by this as she sat and watched as Lord Bholenath advanced as a Jyotirlinga. This place became visible as Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple.

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is the second among the 12 holy Jyotirlingas. It is situated on the banks of Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh on a mountain named Srisailam. This temple has been called Mount Kailash of the South. According to the description given in the Mahabharata, worshiping Lord Shiva on Mount Srishail gives the same results as performing Ashwamedha Yagya.Lord Shiva is referred to as "Arjuna," and Parvati is known as "Mallika." Thus collectively they reside here under the name of Sri Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is also a Mahashakti Peetha. The neck (neck or throat) of Mata Sati had fallen here.

Mata Bhramaramba Devi Temple, also known as Shakti Peeth Temple, is a Hindu temple located in the town of Srisailam in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhramaramba, a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Shakti. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, which are considered to be sacred sites associated with the worship of Shakti, the personification of divine feminine energy.

According to Hindu mythology, the Shakti Peethas were created as a result of the self-immolation of Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva. When Sati's father, Daksha, performed a yagna (fire sacrifice) and did not invite her husband, Sati was so filled with rage that she threw herself into the sacrificial fire. Shiva, grief-stricken and enraged, picked up the body of Sati and began a cosmic dance of destruction. To calm him down, the gods chopped Sati's body into 51 pieces, which fell to earth at different locations. These locations became the Shakti Peethas, where the different parts of Sati's body are believed to have fallen. The Mata Bhramaramba Devi Temple is believed to be the site where Sati's eyes fell.
