What is Bhasma Aarti?
According to legend, in ancient times there was a demon named Dushan. Because of that the people of Ujjain were upset. To free the people there from that tyrannical demon, Lord Shiva killed him. Being killed by that tyrannical monster, the townspeople requested Lord Shiva to settle there. Then Lord Shiva settled there in the form of Mahakal.
It is believed that Lord Shiva applied the ashes left after destroying the pollution on himself. Based on this mythological story, this Shiva temple was named Mahakaleshwar.
What are the rules of Bhasma Aarti of Ujjain
In the Mahakaleshwar temple, Shiva is decorated with the first pyre lit in the cremation ground. Different forms of Lord Shiva are worshiped 6 times a day in this temple. Bhasma Aarti is performed only by the priests of the temple. There is a rule for men to participate in it wearing dhoti.
On the other hand, due to the belief that Lord Shiva is in formless form, women are not allowed to see this form of Bholenath. They are allowed to come to this Aarti only after wearing a clean and cotton saree and wearing a veil.
